Ok – been saying this for a while, in various ways – here and here – and actually even my very first post nearly 5 years ago – that I recalled earlier today …  find the original here. But what I am highlighting this time is the source. Accounting Today. Maybe it is just me – but I never really see the accounting profession at the vanguard of modern communications – but they seem to be getting it a lot more quickly than the social media pundits out there – oh wait …. “Follow The Money” !

Meanwhile - I am a found member of <a href="https://thegrid.io" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Grid </a>- and cannot wait to get my hands on it - so I can restart Just Good Music in a VERY different way.

Until then – I maintain a love and interest in music – – particularly the business side – and as I was cleaning up some backlog this afternoon – discovered this wonderful item. I wonder how we can help.

But then add to that <strong>Measurement and Governance</strong>.

His point on ‘Measurement‘ is truly important – bottom line – don’t make stuff up. You already have corporately agreed measurements in place – think KPIs …. Use those. Ask yourself – how does what I am doing map to those KPIs?

And then ‘Governance.’ That is going to vary depending on your organization …. But again – the key is don’t reinvent the wheel – find who is responsible and adopt their work.

But then – the piece de résistance.

…. it occurred to me while reading it that I was missing a critical question at the end, so I am adding it… Can we put social business behind us now and move to an evolved version of business that needs to deal with cloud, mobility, and complex analytics?)

Hallelujah … though not totally for the same reason – but the over use of SocialXXX is nuts. We are moving out of the industrialization of everything phase – very fast – and into a brave new world. Social xxx is really just xxx, because if it isn’t at your company already – it will be dying shortly.

Well worth following. Well worth reading. Most of the time the reading bit is easy - he's the guy that draws cartoons on the back of business cards. He has just posted what he self-describes as "Perhaps my most important blog post for a while. Time will tell." Not sure - but it is starting to connect some dots for me around this whole social media thingy. You see I am one of those crazies that believe that

1) social media is here to stay BUT

2) social media hasn’t ever been away

It basically is a new name for something that we all do, always have done – been doing it for ever. Back in the day we had that old thing called Word of Mouth – but then the corporations started taking that over and replacing it with CorporateAd/Marketing speak.

We are coming full circle – but now all that stuff is being enabled through technology – we had to rename it and of course measure it.

Because it’s actually talking about stuff that actually matters to people. It’s not enough for people to like your product. For them to really LOVE it, somehow they’ve got to connect and empathize with the basic, primal human drives that compelled you create your product in the first place. The Purpose. The Idea. Otherwise you are just one more piece of clutter to them.
