What Is Income?

I Think It Is Any Monies That You Receive

…but actually, as we well know, this isn’t how the US Tax Code sees it.

Many people think Americans pay more taxes than other countries, which is not true. Many Americans pay more taxes than other Americans, and it’s not the richest Americans who pay the most. Should everyone pay the same percentage of their income, or should the richest Americans pay a higher percentage of their income? First we need to get to a common definition of income!

“First we need to get to a common definition of income!” How hard can that be?

I guess what I’m trying to say is, if, as Boas famously claimed, the Eskimos have dozens of words for “snow,” then in an emerging knowledge work society, we should have more than a handful of words to describe the mental efforts on which, more and more, our livelihoods depend.

Needless to say, I agree completely with the sentiments.

I am not an advocate of never changing language – but I do like it to be used correctly. e.g. (or ‘i.e.’ as too many people write), the use of ‘e.g.’
