Couldn’t Resist

“Mass customization, on-demand local manufacturing, and local sustainable power are trends that suggest that centralized hubs can, and hopefully will, disappear in the coming decades. It may be the second coming of the customer as king.”

John Wunderlich

Nailed. In a nutshell. If you will pardon the mixed metaphor.

I for one hope so – in fact – let me go further it may be the second coming of people assuming their rightful position in the world, pushing corporations that do not respect people back and deeply into the history books.1

John then went on to quote

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.2

W.B. Yeats, The Second Coming.

Reproduced here in full:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
THE SECOND COMING

Can Catch You Unawares

Just spent a fascinating hour on a call with T. Rob, Bruce Simons-Morton, Britt Blaser and Louis Rawlins – key learning …”politics is not government”.

After the call Britt shared these links … which I wanted to store away for posterity as I think. Ultimately, some of this might make its way over here, but not yet.

A blog post from Doc Searls writing about a lecture that was being given by Larry Lessig

At the end of which he referenced a post by Britt … in which he references Dave Winer and Doc Searls – who you know I reference a lot.

“Neo, no one’s ever done anything like this”
“That’s why it’s going to work.”

One of the victims of the Las Vegas shooting this past weekend.

I didn’t know him, he looks a nice guy. He was shot while dancing with his son.

So why am I writing about John specifically? Well, because I have now received two emails from people I know checking in with me, apparently confusing Phippen and Philpin. (Easily done … it’s an odd name.) Suffice to say, I am alive and well. Sadly John (who I did not know) is not.

“One minute he was dancing with his son, and the next minute, he was being carried to a car, fatally wounded.”

The following is extracted form Heavy.

There is a GoFundMe site to help his children. According to SignalCV, “John Phippen ran a home remodelling and repair company in Valencia called J P Specialities.”

According to The Los Angeles Times, “He was dancing next to his son, Travis, at the country music festival in Las Vegas when he was struck by a bullet in the lower back. Travis, an emergency medical technician, carried his father to a car” that rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.

“Today, we lost an amazing, wonderful, selfless, sweet soul of man to a senseless act of violence in the Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting,” it reads.

“My name is Leah Nagyivanyi and I was a Santa Clarita neighbour and a friend of John’s for 17+ years. My husband Paul and John had become very close over the past three years. All of us spending time in the Sand Dunes, Havasu and doing lots of beach camping. We intertwined many of our friends and to say we are devastated by this loss is an understatement. If you didn’t know John you surely missed out. He had a heart that was larger than life and a personality to match. You felt like you knew him for years the first time you met him. He was a simple man who enjoyed the simple things in life and having fun doing them.”

Phippen was remembered as a man who “had your back from the moment he met you and by having your back that could mean, having a cold beer in your hand when yours was empty or if you needed help with your car or in our case, your sandrail, your house or you just needed to chill. Even if you were someone he had never met before but were in need, he was there for you.”

Distressed Communities In America

Read all about it here …. key takeaways …

  • New jobs are clustered in the economy’s best-off places, leaving one of every four new jobs for the bottom 60% of ZIP Codes.
  • Most of today’s distressed communities have seen zero net gains in employment and business establishment since 2000. In fact, more than half have seen net losses on both fronts.
  • Half of adults living in distressed ZIP Codes are attempting to find gainful employment in the modern economy armed with only a high school education at best.
  • The healthier the economy, the healthier the person: People in distressed communities die five years earlier.

It’s not just for taxis – it’s also needed for good grammar

Originally published over at Taxi Leaks, this provided a chuckle this morning and happens to sit at the intersection of two topics dear to my heart. Uber and Accurate Language. (Slightly edited for better flow and consistency with this blog’s style.)

“licence” is a noun

“license” is a verb

(in British English, the Americans use “license” for both )

Hard to remember UNLESS you think of ” advice ” and ” advise ” , which work exactly the same way but their respective pronunciations give them away.

FYI ” practice ” and ” practise ” also work the same way

SO to choose a random example :

Uber have lost their licence

Uber are no longer licensed

Uber were not deemed fit and proper to hold a licence

TfL’s licensing decision re Uber was the right one

Uber are appealing against the loss of their licence

We all hope that Uber are not relicensed

Hope that helps !

Vaughan Williams.

Who is Vaughan Williams? Producer of the stage play from the movie ‘The Knowledge’

They Need To Be Understood

But there is so much more.

For the longest time, my sentence description for what I do is ‘translate’

Tech Speak to Business Speak.

Sales Speak to Marketing Speak.

English Speak To American Speak.

Corporate Speak to Customer Speak.

I didn’t start that way … but when I look back at what I have done and attempt to explain what some would consider to be an eclectic career – that is the common thread. Back in 2012 I wrote this.

I was prompted to write this as I was thinking today about a dialogue I had with a good friend of mine around the People First initiative … dialogue modified  to make sense out of context …

ME: I am thinking that IF People First is focussing on the future present of work …. (since ALL language you read is really about impact on corporations and society – not really on the individual), then one aspect I want to be talked about is IF you are an individual – what is the language YOU should use?

For example …. I am not ‘talent’. You are not going to ‘acquire me’, so why does a corporation talk about ‘talent acquisition’. On the flip side – I have mobility and can move around and YOU dear corporation have to jump to this piper, who is playing my tune.

Make sense ?

Friend: Makes sense.

I don’t frame it as a ‘corporate and you’ thing.

I frame it as an understanding, sense making and modelling thing where the refreshed and healthier models can live in various contexts.

ME: I frame it as the interface / intersection where the translation occurs. That is where I hang out, always have done – which in turn plays to …

“ an understanding, sense making and modelling thing where the refreshed and healthier models can live in various contexts.”

Flagging and highlighting this now and will come back to it later.

… and now we are discovering the truth

Cyprus ‘selling’ EU citizenship

… not just to anyone – no .. to the super rich of Russia and Ukraine. And if you are paying attention, you won’t have ‘read it here first’, but watch when Mueller’s findings become more public how inextricably linked organizations like The Bank Of Cyprus are to the Trump Administration and his branding organization. (Sorry – hard time calling it Real Estate).

Hands up if you are surprised.

So you want a job ….

I Built A Bot To Apply To Thousands Of Jobs At Once–Here’s What I Learned

It’s the conclusion that says it all ..

  • It’s not how you apply, it’s who you know. And if you don’t know someone, don’t bother.
  • Companies are trying to fill a position with minimal risk, not discover someone who breaks the mold.
  • The number of jobs you apply to has no correlation to whether you’ll be considered, and you won’t be considered for jobs you don’t get the chance to apply to.

Sad that it is the case and sad that it was so surprising that it warrants an article in Fast Company.

England and America

“I miss the English,” he says. “I miss Londoners. I miss the wit. Americans, they’re very, well, de Tocqueville saw this coming in about 1850 – he said, it’s a marvelous thing, American democracy, but don’t they know how it’s going to end up? It’s going to be so mushy that no one will dare say anything for fear of offending someone else. That’s why Americans aren’t as witty as Brits, because humour is about giving a little bit of offence. It’s an assertion of intellectual superiority. Americans are just as friendly and tolerant as Londoners, but they flinch from mocking someone’s background or education.”

I couldn’t have said it better – which explains why Martin Amis is famous for his writing – and I am not! [ Read the full article. ]

That said, England is changing as well.

It isn’t about stuff anymore

The article is called “Inconspicuous Consumption and the Rise of the Aspirational Class”

… inconspicuous? … no it isn’t!

… really!

I Think It Is Any Monies That You Receive

…but actually, as we well know, this isn’t how the US Tax Code sees it.

This today from Frank McPherson

Many people think Americans pay more taxes than other countries, which is not true. Many Americans pay more taxes than other Americans, and it’s not the richest Americans who pay the most. Should everyone pay the same percentage of their income, or should the richest Americans pay a higher percentage of their income? First we need to get to a common definition of income!

“First we need to get to a common definition of income!” How hard can that be?

Sadly, I think this is more true than a cartoon would have it …
