In case you were wondering :
‘Hand. Cannot. Erase.’ is the highly anticipated fourth studio album from Steven Wilson. Joined by Guthrie Govan (guitar), Adam Holzman (keyboards), Nick Beggs (bass / stick), and Marco Minneman (drums) – all part of the world-class band that graced The Raven and the 2013/2014 world tours – Wilson recorded ‘Hand. Cannot. Erase.’ at the renowned Air Studios in London.
And the first review is in :
Sangeet continues the drum beat of ‘Platformed’. I reference and ‘borrow’ his thinking a lot – but don’t always post here. This time I make an exception, because it clearly explains what I have been trying to get people to understand for the last two years. Bottom line, he examines the roadmap to success for Social companies in the consumer space. In passing flagging why Friendster and MySpace stalled. Then moving into the world that I remain get fixated on .. The Social Enterprise. (no – that isn’t allowing people access to Facebook in the workplace).
Sangeet calls out the 5 stages of Social Adoption, which for simplicity I repeat here – but you can also get the full story – with context here.
Too good not to share …
I wrote the core of this post to someone today and decided I needed to post here ‘for posterity’. The ‘soundtrack of my life’ is heavily centered on what I call ‘English Progressive’. It is more focussed than the more extensive ‘Progressive’ – and in my mind at least keeps it seperate and away from the confusion of Metal, Symphonic Rock and other genres that impinge.
Pink Floyd, Genesis (up to Steve Hackett leaving) and Yes are the most obvious names that can be categorized thus. But add to that names like Caravan, Camel, ELP, Soft Machine, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant … you begin to get the picture. Pink Floyd – for most of my life was the one single band I would name when asked “So .. who is your favorite band?”. But more recently – they have been making way for a new name. Steven Wilson.
According to Amazon it was March 15th 2003 when I purchased In Abstentia – at the time the newest album from a band called Porcupine Tree. Later that year I saw them play live here in San Francisco. Porcupine Tree was the brain child of Steven Wilson.
If you didn’t know of David Carr – you don’t really care.
Many people are writing about him – this one particularly caught my eye – maybe it is the headline ?
“Keep typing until it turns into writing”
Reminded me of a few other favorites I have …
Sufi mystics say the secret of the Qur’an lies
in the verse Al-Fatiha,
And the secret of Al-Fatiha lies in
And the quintessence of Bismillah is the letter ba,
And there is a dot below that letter ….
The dot underneath the B embodies the entire universe….

For the longest time I used “I am my own system of record” as part of my email signature. It came out from my position that the concept that an organization – ANY organization – that was trying to build a realistic picture of who I was – so that they can better sell to me was essentially flawed. It is impossible. (I will write more about that sometime – but I think if you think about it – it is perfectly obvious.) Nobody knows more about me that me. Repeat for the other 7 billion and counting people on the earth.
Delighted now to see that The Berkman Center for Internet and Society @ Harvard University concurs.
In this Wiki article on ‘Project VRM’, I was pleased to see these principle called out ,,,
“It’s like you want to hide in a closet, just you, a few good books, and a close friend. You could manage fine with a flashlight, but your friend has a thousand watts in his heart, and you for the first time you begin to think … you might be better off blind and alone. The fear is that there will be nothing left, that you will be consumed and disappear … fear does that. It causes us to forget how simple it is to open a door …”
… more wise words from Jim Woessner and Story Boxes
… and when I read that – something made me also think of this.
By the numbers there’s my driver’s license,
car registration, license plate, zip code,
various accounts, street address, birthdate
home, work, and cell phones, passport, credit cards
debit cards, PINs, social security
frequent fliers, internet passwords, stocks
checking, HMO, IRA, museums
library card, land and enneagram.
I know its a lot to remember, but
thank god i finally know who I am.
… not my words – but if you want to read them by the author (Jim Woesnner) – and a LOT more of spot on social commentary – look no further than here. Brilliant stuff.
